Ashin Tricarico from Surprise was arrested in connection with a series of crimes. He faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, danger, aggravated assault, and shooting from a vehicle, authorities said.

New court documents allege that Tricarico shot more than a dozen people, apparently at random. In some cases, he pulled up alongside vehicles and put the barrel of an assault rifle through his window, and fired multiple shots, police said.

Tricarico left his home in the city of Surprise with an AR-15 rifle and then bought four boxes of ammunition, filling two 30-round magazines. Matching shell casings were found in some of the shooting scenes, police said.

Peoria police call this a “complex case involving multiple victims, from multiple jurisdictions.” Court documents released Friday give a breakdown of the crime spree that left a trail of victims in several cities. Most of the shooting was reported Thursday, but police believe Tricarico actually started Wednesday night.

A man called 911, reporting a suspect in a white VW van pointing a gun at his car window, while they were both parked in a Circle K. The victim was on the phone with his girlfriend, talking and laughing, and He believes that Tricarico saw him and that was what caused him to be “angry,” according to court documents. When the victim asked, “What’s up, man?” he said that Tricarico replied, “Do you think you’re bad?” The victim told police that Tricarico loaded an assault rifle and pointed it. As they were both walking away, in the same direction, the victim said that he heard a gunshot and glass shattering, so he ducked. But he was not injured and no bullets hit his vehicle.

Peoria police received multiple 911 calls about a shooting near Northern and 103rd avenues. A driver told police he saw a woman get out of a black Optima, “covered in blood and screaming ‘OMG!’” According to court documents. A second witness saw a white VW van surround the woman’s car and sped away from her. The woman, who at the time had her 3-year-old daughter in the car, was injured by shrapnel. The girl was not injured.

Peoria police received a call about a shooting at Loop 101 and Thunderbird. At that time, no victims were found. But then officers located a deceased man inside a red Toyota pickup in the canal that runs the length of the freeway. The victim had been shot in the neck. A witness said he saw a white pickup pull up next to the pickup, then heard a “pop” and then saw the pickup roll off the road.

An officer driving along Union Hills Drive said he saw the white truck and then noticed a red Chrysler 300 driving slowly with the hazards on. The rear window of the red car had been shattered. The victim in that car was not injured. But around the same time, they shot 2 more people in the same area. A man and his adult daughter were driving down Union Hills Road when they were fired upon from a white pickup truck. The woman was shot in the leg. The man was hit by shrapnel.

The surprise police received calls about 2 shootings in that area. One man told police he was walking on the sidewalk when a driver in a white pickup truck shot him with a gun. That man was not injured and actually fired his own pistol in the suspect’s direction. Nearby, a man driving down Bell Road said a man in a white van fired multiple rounds at his vehicle. That driver was hit in the head by shrapnel

MCSO was called to a filming scene in Surprise. Three victims driving a red truck south on Loop 303 said they were shot by someone in a white truck. The shots smashed several windows.

The Peoria Fire Department located another victim of the shooting near Loop 303 and Happy Valley Road. Phoenix FBI agents arrived to find three shooting victims. The trio was driving south in a red pickup when they heard gunshots. Two windows were shattered. Two victims were injured by shrapnel.

Suspect Arrested

Victims and witnesses were able to give authorities a description of the suspect’s vehicle and the license plate number. A local fire department spotted the vehicle and called police, who invaded a mall that includes restaurants, a nail salon and a Walgreens.

Neil Betrue, a pastor from Surprise, was alone in his church office when he noticed some police officers and heard a helicopter whizzing overhead. He peeked out the door and saw more officers surrounding the suspect’s car and began recording the commotion on his cell phone.

“I didn’t know at the time that a wave of shootings was going on,” Betrue told The Associated Press on Friday. “I thought maybe there must have been a car chase or something.”

As officers drew their weapons, the suspect, identified as Tricarico, raised his hands in the air. He then he was handcuffed without incident, Betrue’s video shows. “I’m just thankful that he hasn’t tried to put the officers or any of the businesses or anyone else in danger here,” Betrue said.

Police do not believe that anyone else was involved in the attacks.

Police said Tricarico admitted to some of the shooting and refused to speak about others, but he denied shooting a woman or killing the man. Tricarico told police that he was involved in another shooting a month ago in Phoenix while he was a security guard and believes people have been following him for it, according to court documents.

“Ashin believes that every vehicle and every person that passes points a gun at him,” police wrote. He reportedly told police that he thought people had been following him for a week.

Tricarico was working as an armed and licensed security guard at a restaurant in North Phoenix on May 5 when he shot a male customer outside who was reported drunk, causing a riot and charging at Tricarico. He said Phoenix police in a statement Friday night.

Police said the man was taken to a hospital with a non-life-threatening injury and that Tricarico remained at the restaurant and cooperated with investigators. The case is still under investigation and Tricarico told police that he shot the man in self-defense. The weapon he used was seized and remains in police custody.
