Interview with “Megan Lawless”

How has your transition from Virginia to Los Angeles and the world of acting been?

“I’ve been traveling to Los Angeles for extended periods of time to further my acting career since I was 13 years old.” The acting industry is demanding, and it took some getting used to.

There is a lot of rejection, and as a child, I felt pressured to do well because my family and I had made so many sacrifices for me to pursue an acting career.

But this only made me more determined, and at the age of 16, I traveled to Los Angeles on my own to pursue my dream. During this time, I learned to navigate the city on my own, to be homeschooled, to work a part-time job, and to audition for any roles that came my way.

It was difficult at first to adjust to this way of life, but I was embarking on a career, learning about the industry, and receiving excellent training.

Fortunately, I have extremely hands-on and supportive parents who called me every day and helped me overcome any obstacles that arose. When I finally moved to Los Angeles full-time in September, the transition was easy because I had planned ahead of time.”

What are some of your biggest takeaways from playing Maya in the recently released film The Hate U Give and being a part of such an inspiring story and cast?

“Being a part of The Hate U Give has taught me so great; it’s ridiculously wonderful.” On the one hand, the story taught me a lot about dealing with adversity, being compassionate for others, and accepting your own identity.

It was remarkable to witness the enormity of the message and how it resonated with so many people all over the world.

Working with the film’s experienced and genuinely fantastic director, George Tillman, and the cast, on the other hand, was extremely beneficial to me.

They exemplified how professionals (who are excellent at their jobs) conduct themselves. I look up to the people I worked with on set and want to emulate how they approach their careers with such zeal and zeal.”

What are some of the key tools you use to balance your blossoming acting career and your full-time studies at UCLA, where you double major in film and business economics?

“I make every effort to stay organized and prioritize what is most important to me.” What I’ve really learned is that I can’t do it all… and that’s fine.

I have to say no to some things because I have too much on my plate. By doing so, I can focus my energy on doing a great job on the things that are most important to me.

My biggest struggle is that I want to please everyone and do everything, but in order to truly do and be my best, I must say no to the things that aren’t serving me. Also, I can’t skip out on some R&R; it’s critical to have fun and stay healthy throughout all of this! It’s a delicate balance.”

What is the most important thing for you to embody and be an example of in your life in these modern times and cultures?

“It is important to show kindness and decency to others; everyone deserves dignity.” On a daily basis, I try to embody this and follow the golden rule of treating others as you would like to be treated. I also want to show that girls in the entertainment industry can be ambitious, smart, college-educated, fierce businesswomen, and good daughters/sisters/friends.”

What kinds of characters and stories do you want to be a part of in the future?

“In the past, I’ve played roles who was similar to myself or were easy for me to play. Next, I’d like to play characters who are unlike me and pose a challenge to my acting abilities. Maybe an evil, vengeful character, or someone extremely edgy; anything that pushes my skill level.”

What are you excited to share with the rest of the world?

“I hope to share tales that have an impact on somebody.” Those that elicit feelings and have a profound effect on people.

What made being a part of The Hate U Give so incredible was that the story was so timely, so necessary, and so well received. I am confident that the novel and film will leave an indelible mark. “I want to share tales that people remember in all of my activities, whether comedic or emotional.”
