His birthplace is in Plains, Georgia in the United States. He holds American nationality. He had 3 siblings, Gloria, Ruth, and Billy. All three of his siblings died of pancreatic cancer.

He attended Plains High School from 1937 to 1941. He then started undergraduate coursework in engineering at Georgia Southwestern College in nearby Americus. He transferred to the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta in 1942.

He achieved admission to the Naval Academy in 1943. He graduated from the academy in 1946.

He was promoted to lieutenant junior grade in 1949.

He served in the inactive Navy Reserve until 1961. He left the service with the rank of lieutenant.

He was awarded American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, China Service Medal, and National Defense Service Medal.

After his Navy career, he transitioned into agribusiness. The first year of his agribusiness did not turn out to be a success, he took classes, and learned agriculture and accounting as well. Soon, he was able to grow his business and become successful.

Politics

He served as a member of the Georgia state senator from the 14th district from 1963 to 1967.

He then served as the governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975.

He then became the 39th president of the United States.

He announced his candidacy for President of the United States in December 1974.

He later went on to serve as the president from 1977 to 1981.

He ran for President of the United States for the second time. However, he was defeated by Republican Ronald Reagan.

Post Presidency

After his presidency, he remained active in the private sector.

He founded the non-governmental and non-profit organization, Carter Center in 1982.

He disclosed that melanoma had been found in his brain and liver. He announced in December 2015 that his medical scans no longer show any cancer.
