Fakir Alamgir is a Bangladeshi folk singer who was born on February 14th. He rose to prominence as a Gono Sangeet (mass-inspiring songs) vocalist after the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971.

Fakir Alamgir is a well-known figure in Bangladesh’s GonoSangeet scene. He founded the ‘WrishizShilpiGosthi,’ a musical platform that has elevated GonoSangeet to a new level of prominence. His songs have been passed down through the generations and have left an indelible impact on the hearts of the mass people.

“O Sokhina,” “Shantahar,” “Nelson Mandela,” “Naam Tar Chhilo John Henry,” and “Banglar Comrade Bondhu” are some of his best-known songs.

The renowned singer has garnered several major accolades over his illustrious career, including the ‘EkusheyPadak,’ ‘Sher-e-Bangla Padak,’ and ‘BhashaniPadak.’In 1999, the Bangladeshi government bestowed the EkusheyPadak to him.

Early Lifeand Education of “Fakir Alamgir”:

Fakir Alamgir was born on February 21, 1950, in Kalamridha village, Bhanga, Faridpur district,then Pakistan. Hachen Uddin Fakir was his father, and Habibunnesa was his mother. He passed his secondary school exam from Kalamridha Gobinda High School in 1966 and got admitted to Jagannath College. He passed Bachelor exams from there. Fakir Alamgir acquired an MA in journalism from Dhaka University

In 1966, he was an active member of the Students’ Union.

Career of “Fakir Alamgir”:

In 1966, Alamgir began his musical career. In the East Pakistan revolt of 1969, he performed as a vocalist.   During the Liberation War, Alamgir collaborated with Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra.

In 1976, Alamgir founded the cultural group “Wrishiz Shilpi Gosthi.”  He was the president of the Gono Sangeet Shamanya Parishad (GSSP) for many years.

Many of his songs were enormous successes, such as ‘Santahar Junctione Dekha,’ ‘Bonomali Tumi,’ ‘KaloKalo Manusher Deshe,’ ‘Mayer Ek Dhar Dudher Daam,’ ‘Ahare Kallu Matabbar,’ and ‘O Julekha.’ His song ‘O Sakhina’ is still popular. After airing in the BTV magazine ‘Anandamela’ in 1982, the song became an instant hit. The song’s lyricist and pianist was Fakir Alamgir himself.

Alamgir was a writer as well. In 1984, he released his debut novel, Chena China. Muktijuddher Smriti Bijoyer Gaan and Gono Sangeeter Otit O Bortoman were his next two books. Amar Kotha, Jara Achhen Hridoy Potey, and Smriti Alaponey Muktijuddho were among the three works he released in 2013. He was the author of nine novels.

Fakir Alamgir has made significant contributions to the development of Bangla pop music. To portray their wartime sorrows and experiences, he and other singers of the time combined Western pop music with Bangla traditional music.

Death:

Fakir Alamgir was taken to United Hospital in Dhaka on July 14, 2021, with COVID-19-related problems. On the 23rd of July, he had a heart attack while being ventilated in the COVID-19 unit. On the same day, he passed away. He is survived by his wife and three sons.
