ATM Shamsuzzaman was born on September 10, 1941, in Noakhali, British India to Nooruzzaman and Noorunnesa. His father was a prominent lawyer associated with A. K. Fazlul Huq regarding politics. He studied at Collegiate School in Dhaka. Shamsuzzaman passed matriculation from Mymensingh City High School. Then he was admitted into Jagannath University. ATM Khalequzzaman Kushol, a younger son of ATM Shamsuzzaman killed his elder brother ATM Kamaluzzaman Kabir in March 2012. ATM Shamsuzzaman testified to the court eventually younger son got a life sentence in prison.
