Ozzie Smith’s biography

Osborne Earl Smith is an American former professional baseball player. Nicknamed “the Wizard of Oz”, Smith played shortstop for the San Diego Padres and St. Louis Cardinals in Major League Baseball, winning the National League Gold Glove Award for defensive play at shortstop for 13 consecutive seasons.

In 1987, he became the recipient of the NL (National League) Silver Slugger Award for being the best-hitting shortstop of the year. On his first year of eligibility in 2002, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

After his successful baseball career,  Ozzie Smith worked as the host of the TV show This Week in Baseball which was aired from 1997 until 1999. He also became an entrepreneur. In 2012, his net worth was estimated to be around $15 million.

Born in Mobile Alabama on December 26, 1954, as Osborne Earl Smith, he and his family moved to Watts, Los Angeles when he was six years old. This is where he developed his athletic abilities as he discovered his quick reflexes. He then went on to play baseball during high school and college.
