Charges – Arrested

A Canadian couple suspected of a double shooting, and dubbed the “Bonnie and Clyde millennials” by local media, were arrested in Budapest, Romania, after a months-long manhunt, according to police.

Oliver Karafa, 28, and Yun ‘Lucy’ Lu Li, 25, are the prime suspects in a double shooting that took place in February in Hamilton, Ontario. One man died from his injuries and another victim narrowly survived. Hamilton police believe the couple fled the country within 24 hours of the crime.

Shortly after 7:15 p.m. On February 28, police responded to an industrial area on Arvin Ave. in Stoney Creek, according to a police news release. Tyler Pratt, 39, had been shot and killed, and first responders found an unidentified 26-year-old woman in serious condition on the side of a road.

Police said the victims knew each other but did not specify the context of their relationship. After months of searching for Karafa and Li, bounty hunters as part of a unit from the Rapid Response Unit of the National Investigations Office captured the couple in Budapest.

“We have been working since the shooting incident, not only domestically with our RCMP partners, but internationally through Interpol and our law enforcement agencies in Eastern Europe, specifically the Hungarian Active Search Team”, Hamilton Det. Jim Callender said at a press conference on Monday.

Callender believes the runaway couple traveled through several countries before reaching Hungary, including the Czech Republic and Slovakia, where Karafa was born.

It is not the first time that Karafa has faced criminal charges.

In 2012, a judge sentenced Karafa to five years in prison after Karafa slammed the Land Rover into a pole and killed his friend and passenger, 24-year-old David Chiang. Karafa was convicted of drunk driving and criminal negligence. Chiang was ejected from the vehicle and died instantly as Karafa, who was drunk and driving at more than twice the speed limit, drove away without injury.

“I made a terrible decision that will haunt me for the rest of my life,” Karafa said, according to the Toronto Sun.

Now, Karafa and Li remain in custody while international authorities arrange the details for the couple to return to Canada to face the charges. Karafa and Li face charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder.
