Early Life, Education, and Career
Dhruv Rathee was born in Haryana, India in a HaryanviJaat family. He did his schooling from Haryana itself in CBSE school and after that, he went to Germany for further studies where he did his bachelors in Mechanical Engineering. And also completed his master’s degree in Renewable Energy. Since childhood, he was very interested in social causes and takes part in social campaigns such as “Sea Shephard” and “Greenpeace” and did studies and research about Economics, Political Science, and Political Philosophy he also takes.
He started his career as a mechanical design engineer, after completion of his master’s degree. His interest in political issues and social awareness grew in 2011 after the start of Anna Hazare’s movement in Delhi. In 2013 Dhruv created a YouTube channel and usually posted a few travel videos and photography videos with his phone during his higher studies.
In the year 2014, he released a debut political video titled “BJP Exposed: Lies Behind The Bullshit” where he targeted the BJP government that had been elected earlier that year. After that, in 2016 he earned fame when he exposed YouTuber Ajay Sehrawat’s claims of Arvind Kejriwal’s “ineffective” administration. Dhruv said, “When I saw people sharing Ajay Sehrawat’s videos without checking the facts, I realized the need to present actual research in front of them so that they understand the truth.”
After that Dhruv made many series of fact-checking videos on the topics like the 2016 Uri attack, the 2016 Indian Line of Control Strike, the 2016 Indian Banknote Bandi(demonetization), and the Gurmehar Kaur row. He launched Pee News, a satire “fake news” segment, in which he criticized BJP and Hindutva politics. Dhruv also started a series which he named “The Dhruv Rathi Show”. He has been writing articles in a digital news story called “ThePrint” since 2017.
His success in YouTube was due to his interest in social issues and politics who raise his voice against any discrimination going on in our country, making videos of political issues and social awareness. He is very active in posting videos on his channel on the ongoing situation of the country like political aspects and other social causes and sometimes he comes across controversial videos which bring him into trouble. A police complaint was also filed against Rathee on 9 May 2018, in Delhi by an advocate on behalf of Vikas Pandey, a self-described “Bharatiya Janata Party Volunteer”. Vikas registered a complaint against Dhruv and sued him for the defamation of 15 lakhs.
In November 2020, Actress Kangana Ranaut has responded to Dhruv Rathee’s viral video about her and she claims against him that he took a significant amount of money to make it. In his video, Dhruv had complained about how Kangana is hypocritical in her statements and has a propensity of embellishing her comments. She also said ” I can put YouTuber Dhruv Rathee behind bars for making a video on her and lying about BMC sending her a notice in 2018.
In the year 2019, his Facebook page was blocked for a while; where he made a post about Hitler’s rise to power, which totally drew a parallel with the rise of right-wing politics.
